station3 for the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra

Marxloh Music Circus 2025

The Marxloh Music Circus is an initiative by the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra that brings the traditional orchestra into exchange with the local music scene in northern Duisburg. Its goal is to connect residents of the neighborhood with musicians from the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra to rediscover music together.

In June 2025, a street festival took place around the Pollmann-Eck in Duisburg, showcasing Marxloh’s musical diversity and bringing the orchestra even closer to the community. For the Marxloh Music Circus, station3 developed an independent design concept that not only reflected the cultural diversity and creative energy of the project but also aimed to attract attention, invite people, and motivate active participation.

Because collaborating with a classical orchestra was unfamiliar for many, the design focused on approachability and accessibility, breaking down barriers and making it easy for everyone to engage.

What does your Marxloh sound like?

For the Marxloh Music Circus, we developed a look that makes personal stories visible and invites musical dialogue. The design concept: The individual voices of the musicians meet a clear visual language. This interplay is staged through dynamic portraits by photographer J. Konrad Schmidt, framed by a question-and-answer feature that fosters closeness and breaks down barriers.

The look combines strong imagery with bold, clear typography and high-contrast colors. This creates a visual framework that emphasizes the unique voices of all participants and encourages active engagement. Headlines were translated into multiple languages and applied to various promotional materials in a theme-based approach. They are flexible, modular, and can be used across all platforms.

“The station3 team immediately understood the sociocultural significance of the Marxloh Music Circus and translated it into a strong visual expression that has also advanced our own understanding of the project. I am especially grateful for the excellent project management, which ensured efficient processes and clear structures.”
